New J. Phlip Mix - !@#$%^&

J. Phlip, aka Jessica Phillippe, originally hails from Champaign, and recently moved (from Chicago) to San Francisco. She held many residencies in Champaign, including Barfly and Soma, as well as residencies down by the Bay. (bad joke, I know) She's released a bunch of great mix cds, some even deviating from her main house music style, and also won a competition a few years back for BPM magazine.

She was recently inducted into the Dirtybird crew, releasing her first track "Rumble Rumble" last month. A tsunami of bonecrunching bass and a tapestry of clicks, synths and bells make this track perfect for the dancefloor. It's available on Beatport digitally and at Juno.co.uk on a one-sided 12" vinyl record. (as well as other vinyl & digital retailers)

And now J. Phlip just put out this great mix, using part of her famous catchphrase "ahhhhhh!@#$%^&*" as the title. J. Phlip's style seems to have always been sassy and feminine, yet edgy and down-to-business... and this recent mix delivers that same style very well. She starts the mix off with an ethereal sort-of downtempo track with some IDM influences and a female vocal, and blends into a nice dubby tech house track with some excellent delayed horns. After that, she journeys through all the shades of tech house, keeping things very dynamic but easy to follow. All the mixing is precise, and the blends are long and smooth.

She features her newly released Dirtybird track in a very interesting mashup with a song called Milf. I was surprised but delighted to hear the classic track "Cicada" by Justin Martin and (remixed by) Claude VonStroke. Many DJs releasing mixes today think that they need to have all the newest freshest stuff, and often neglect older music... so it's nice to see a classic like that in there, especially when it's blended so well with the Zombie Disco Squad track preceding it. Overall, this is an excellent mix, I already burned the mix to a CD and it will be playing in my car for quite a while I'm sure. Tracklist Formatting - Need Input

I've decided to move all the old Radioactivity tracklists over to this blog, and start posting new ones here from now on. Also, I will begin hosting archives of the show, so if you missed the show one week, you can download it and listen later. In preparation for this transition, I've been thinking about changing the format of my tracklists. Here is the format I currently use:

Artists are in bold, request markers in italic, special segments in italics and set off in dash-lines (though special segments are rare), and numbers one through nine as 01-09 to match the space of double digit numbers.

The main thing I want to emphasize is the artist's name. I want to make it stand out, but I almost wonder if bold is too much. One option I was thinking of is actually making the artist's name into a link to the artist's website/myspace, like so:

Font Download Stats

I just want to thank everyone who downloaded my first two fonts Giraffe and Mothership... when I first logged into Dafont to check my download stats, I was blown away by the numbers. And the numbers just keep steadily growing. I understand that many many people download fonts just because they're interesting, regardless of whether or not they're planning to use them. (I know I do.) But still, having my fonts on that many machines is otherworldly to me. So thank you so much everyone! And after looking at the lopsided numbers, once I release Dropship I'll start concentrating on more practical typefaces instead of the obscure ones like Mothership.

Dropship Font - Coming Soon!

My newest font Dropship will be finished shortly. I designed it as a sister font to my previous Mothership font. I used the same structure but different elements to create it, so the two fonts should work well together. So keep an eye out! I'll post up again once the font is available. And keep an eye out for the previously mentioned Space Dust font, as well as the new multi-weight font... they're both progressing nicely.

Flying Lotus is a Visionary

Here's a megaupload link to the new Flying Lotus BBC Essential Mix!!! (yanked from a post on Mad Decent, admittedly) Check the Mad Decent article for a full tracklisting and an in-browser streaming option. It's about 2 hours long... and includes 69 tracks! In a 4 hour shift on Radioactivity I get through about 50 tracks on average, and FlyLo breezes through almost 70 in 2 hours... and with perfect mixing and killer blends. And the track selection is top notch... I'm willing to bet that at least half of the tracks in this list haven't been released yet. And, he adds some of that adultswimesque humor by using a synthesized voice with a british accent to introduce the mix, with a little Tim & Eric glitchy stuttering to round it out. Classic.

In addition to this stellar mix, only a few days earlier FlyLo released LA EP 2 x 3 (a remix EP of his album Los Angeles), which includes productions from the regular heavyweights: Samiyam, Martyn, Ras G... and introduces some new lesser-known killer producers too.

I just had to rant for a bit, because I seriously love Flying Lotus' music with a passion. Honestly, it makes me kind-of a fanboy... but I'd buy anything he releases before even listening to it, because there's no way I could dislike any music he makes. I've got a great feeling about FlyLo and his future... if he was a publicly owned company I would put my entire life savings in his stock. Haha. Seriously though, I wish him the best of luck and I only see his career skyrocketing from here. Can't wait to hear the next EP, and for some of those unreleased tracks!
